Festival d’Avignon

July 5 July 26

Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d’Avignon is now one of the biggest international theatre events featuring contemporary live performance. For 789years now, the city of Avignon turns into a thriving theatre city.

The Festival d’Avignon means 79 years of universal values at the service of the cultural riches in contemporary creation. 79 years of perspective connecting Art and social realities, 79 years of political and aesthetic choices that have witnessed the greatest changes in living theatre, and that reflect the diversity and complexity of the world.

Visiting Provence during the summer festival season is a must-do on everyone’s ultimate travel bucket list. You can expect amazing food, wonderful outdoor theater and great music in spectacular settings. Through July and August, you’ll also find lots of mini festivals and farmers markets throughout the region that are full of regional specialties, the freshest produce, and Provençal goods such as lavender, tablecloths, clothes and more.

The South of France is bursting with rich culture, punctuated every summer by a host of festivals throughout Provence. If you choose to explore the region consider these river cruise itineraries Colors of Provence or Essence of Burgundy & Provence on AmaWaterways.
